Foodservice plays key role in supporting this senior health need

As warmer weather increases dehydration risk — particularly for seniors — foodservice operators in senior living facilities have an opportunity to position their dining programs as a frontline tool in resident care.
Hydration is a persistent and often underestimated risk in senior living, especially as temperatures rise. In the U.S., dehydration affects an estimated 17-28 percent of older adults, with even higher rates in long-term care settings, where 30 percent or more of residents may be dehydrated or at risk, according to research published by the National Institutes of Health. The impact is significant: dehydration contributes to hospitalizations, chronic disease progression, and cognitive decline. Yet the condition is considered a largely preventable one.
For operators, this makes hydration a critical foodservice priority, not just a clinical one. In residential care communities, where a large proportion of residents need help with multiple daily activities, consistent fluid intake often depends on staff support and structured dining programs.
Operators can help address this challenge with foodservice-driven solutions. They might offer high-water-content foods (fruit, soups, gelled desserts), embed hydration prompts into meal service, and use beverage carts or mobile stations to increase access throughout the day. They can also integrate hydration tracking into digital nutrition systems to flag at-risk residents earlier. By aligning culinary, clinical, and operational teams around hydration strategies, communities can reduce avoidable health events and improve the care they provide overall.
