Mealtimes aren’t just about nourishment – they’re a vital opportunity for social connection through the sharing of experiences. That’s especially true for seniors experiencing loneliness. (In recent years, the U.S. Surgeon General reported that widespread loneliness poses health risks as deadly as smoking up to 15 cigarettes daily, costing the health industry billions of dollars annually.)
Within senior living facilities and outside of them, there are creative strategies businesses can use to help seniors forge critical social connections that benefit their overall wellbeing. Research has found that structured shared-meal programs – like restaurant-style dining options that include seasonal menus – consistently improve well-being. Specifically, they help participants form friendships and experience heightened life satisfaction, even when the nutritional benefits alone aren’t enough to move physical health markers, according to a report in Innovation Aging. Beyond standard communal dining, programs including themed dinners, family-style meals, and “meal buddy” pairings (aimed at new or more isolated residents) can boost social interaction and turn food into an occasion – not just a necessity. These programs aren’t limited to senior living facilities: The AP reports that in over two dozen states, Meals on Wheels partners with local restaurants to offer seniors flexible, social dining experiences at no cost. Participants can choose meals from a dietitian-approved menu using swipe cards, enjoying both healthy food and valuable companionship. Donations aren’t required but are encouraged – and in a number of cases, funding from the program has allowed restaurants to retain staff and remain open, according to the AP.
